Subjects

Every subject we actually teach

Eight subjects, taught one to one and online, from Year 7 through to A-Level and Functional Skills Level 2. Maths, English, Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Religious Studies.

That is the full list. We would rather tell you plainly that a subject is not covered than take the booking and hope.

Same £30 a lesson whichever subject and whichever level.

All eight

Which subjects do you tutor?

Maths, English Language and Literature, Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Religious Studies. Each has its own page with the topics covered, and its own tutors rather than one generalist stretched across all eight.

Maths

KS3 to A-Level

Foundation and Higher tier, from the algebra that loses people in Year 9 to A-Level calculus. Lessons work through past paper questions with the tutor watching the working rather than only the answer.

Topics
Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics, calculus
Tutors
14, including two PGCE qualified teachers
Also
Functional Skills Level 2 Maths for adults
GCSE Maths tutoring

English

KS3 and GCSE

Language and Literature, both papers. Poetry comparison, the Shakespeare extract, unseen texts and the creative writing section that most students write off as unteachable when it is the most teachable part of the paper.

Topics
Comprehension, essay structure, poetry, Shakespeare, creative writing, grammar
Tutors
11, including a former AQA examiner and a PGDE English teacher
Also
Functional Skills Level 2 English
GCSE English tutoring

Combined Science

KS3 and GCSE

All three sciences in one course, which is where students most often fall behind in one and let it drag the whole grade down. Includes the required practicals and mark scheme analysis, not just content.

Topics
Biology, Chemistry and Physics content, required practicals, six mark questions
Tutors
13 across the three sciences
Tiers
Foundation and Higher, Trilogy and Synergy
GCSE Science tutoring

Biology

KS3 to A-Level

Separate Biology or the Biology half of Combined Science. The exam rewards precise language more than general understanding, which is why students who feel they know it still lose marks.

Topics
Cells, organisation, infection, bioenergetics, homeostasis, inheritance, ecology
Tutors
5, including an MTech, an MSc and a medical doctor
A-Level
Covered, including examiner experienced tutors
GCSE Biology tutoring

Chemistry

KS3 to A-Level

The quantitative topics are where Chemistry grades are actually decided. Moles, bonding, energetics and equilibrium get taught properly rather than skipped in favour of easier content.

Topics
Atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, energy changes, organic chemistry
Tutors
4, including an MSc in Inorganic Chemistry
A-Level
Covered, including practical endorsement theory
GCSE Chemistry tutoring

Physics

KS3 and GCSE

Waves, forces and electricity are where most students come unstuck, usually because they can rearrange the equation but cannot picture what is happening. Taught with worked examples rather than formula sheets.

Topics
Forces, energy, waves, electricity, magnetism, particle model, required practicals
Tutors
6, including a PhD in Physics
A-Level
Available on request, ask us before booking
GCSE Physics tutoring

Computer Science

KS3 to A-Level

The theory paper and the practical coding pull in different directions, and most students are comfortable with one and frozen by the other. Taught by people who write code professionally as well as teach it.

Topics
Python, algorithms, data representation, networks, databases, cyber security, systems
Tutors
7, including working software engineers
A-Level
Covered, plus IGCSE and O-Level
GCSE Computer Science tutoring

Religious Studies

KS3 to A-Level

The twelve mark evaluation questions carry most of the paper, and students routinely answer them as description instead of argument. That gap is the whole job, and it is a teachable one.

Topics
Christianity, Islam, ethics, philosophy, world religions, evaluation essays
Tutors
6, including an MA in Theology
A-Level
Covered, including Philosophy and Ethics
GCSE Religious Studies tutoring

Subject by level

Which subjects run at which level?

Every subject runs at KS3 and GCSE. Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Religious Studies also run at A-Level. Physics and English at A-Level depend on tutor availability, so ask before you book.

Specifications

Which exam boards do you cover?

AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, and WJEC with Eduqas. Lessons follow the student's own specification, so an Edexcel Higher student is not practising OCR Foundation questions.

AQAAll subjects
Pearson EdexcelAll subjects
OCRAll subjects
WJEC and EduqasAll subjects

Not sure which board the school uses?

Send us the course name or the specification code from the front of an exercise book or a past paper, and we will identify it before lessons start. Parents very often do not know, and it takes us a minute to check.

Some tutors also cover IGCSE and O-Level, which is listed on their individual profiles.

Scotland and Northern Ireland

SQA qualifications such as National 5 and Higher, and CCEA specifications, are not part of our standard coverage. Contact us before booking and we will tell you honestly whether we have somebody who can help with your specification.

We would rather say no at the enquiry stage than take a booking and teach the wrong course.

If your subject is missing

What if you do not teach the subject we need?

Then we will say so. Eight subjects is the honest list, and adding History, Geography, Psychology or Modern Languages to a page does not conjure up a tutor who can teach them.

Ask anyway

Tutors join through recommendation and the list changes. If we have somebody suitable we will say so, and if we do not we will tell you rather than putting a generalist in front of your child.

Two subjects at once

Plenty of families run Maths with one tutor and Science with another. Some tutors cover both Maths and English together. Either way it is the same £30 a lesson.

Adults and resits

Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English for apprenticeships and college places, plus November and summer GCSE resits in Maths and English.

Common questions

Questions about subjects

Anything not answered here, message us and we will tell you straight.

Which subjects do you tutor?

Maths, English Language and Literature, Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Religious Studies. All eight run at KS3 and GCSE, and most run at A-Level. We also teach Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English for adults.

Do you teach History, Geography or Modern Languages?

No. Our tutors cover the eight subjects listed on this page. Ask us anyway if you need something else, because the tutor list changes, but we will not take a booking for a subject we cannot teach properly.

Does the price change by subject?

No. Every subject and every level is £30 a lesson, dropping to £27.50 on a term plan and £25 on an annual plan. An A-Level Chemistry hour costs the same as a KS3 Maths hour, which is not true of most agencies.

Do you cover Foundation and Higher tier?

Yes, both, and the tier is part of how we match a tutor. A Higher tier student aiming for a 7 needs different teaching from a Foundation student aiming for a 5, and putting them with the wrong tutor wastes everyone's time.

Can we do more than one subject?

Yes. Some families run two subjects with two different tutors, and some tutors cover two subjects themselves. Maths and English together is the most common combination. It is the same rate per lesson either way.

Do you teach Triple Science as well as Combined?

Yes. Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics each have their own tutors and their own pages, and Combined Science is covered by tutors who teach across all three.

What about A-Level?

Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Religious Studies run at A-Level with specialist tutors. A-Level Physics and English depend on who is free that term, so ask before booking and we will confirm.

Do you cover primary school subjects?

No. We start at KS3, so Year 7 upwards. If you need primary support we would rather point you elsewhere than take the work.

Free 30-minute trial

Tell us the subject and we will find the tutor

Send the year group, the subject and what is going wrong. We will put forward one tutor who teaches exactly that, and set up a free 30-minute trial before anything is booked.
