Where you are in the year
The answer changes what revision should look like. A year out, you fix foundations. A week out, you do not. Trying to teach content in the final fortnight is the most common way revision time gets wasted.
The cheapest and least stressful time to fix anything. Nothing is urgent, so the weak foundations can actually be rebuilt rather than worked around.
Mock results are the most useful thing a student gets all year, and most families do nothing with them. This is the point where a grade can still move several places.
Content teaching mostly stops here. The work is prioritising ruthlessly, practising under timed conditions and fixing how answers are written.
Genuinely worth doing, but only for the right things. One session before a specific paper can clear a blocking topic or fix how a long answer is structured.
Tell us which of these you are in when you enquire, and the first session is planned around it. A parent asking in October and a parent asking the week before a paper need very different things, and pretending otherwise wastes both.

Four patterns account for most of it, and each needs a different fix.
The last one is the most common at grade 5 and above, and the fastest to fix. A student who knows the material and writes it badly can move a grade in a few weeks.
Inside a lesson
Sixty minutes live on Zoom, working through exam questions rather than notes. The tutor watches the working, marks it against the real scheme, and the reason for each lost mark gets named rather than fixed silently.
Subjects
Maths, English, the Sciences, Computer Science and Religious Studies. Each loses marks in a different way, so revision looks different in each rather than being one method applied to everything.
One weak topic affects several question types, so the fastest gains come from finding which two or three are doing the damage. Fifteen Maths tutors, both tiers.
Students usually understand the question and still write a weak answer under timed conditions. That is structure and technique, not comprehension. Twelve English tutors including a former AQA examiner.

Revision specialists
Revision tutoring rewards a particular kind of tutor: one who knows where marks are awarded rather than one who knows the most content. These six are the ones we most often match for exam-season work.
English Language and Literature
Has marked the papers, which is worth more in revision season than in September. The difference between a grade 6 and a grade 8 answer is usually what the mark scheme rewards rather than how much the student knows.

Maths, past paper method
Works almost entirely through past papers and mock questions, marking as he goes. If your child knows the content but keeps dropping marks on the paper itself, that is exactly the gap he works on.
Best for students losing marks on technique rather than content
Maths, Higher tier
Specialises in the back end of the Higher paper, where trigonometry, statistics and multi step reasoning decide whether a student lands a 6 or an 8. Those are the questions most revision skips.
Best for Higher tier students chasing the top grades
Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Covers all three sciences, which matters in revision season because Combined Science students are rarely equally weak across them. One tutor can target the weakest without a second set of lessons.

English Language
Fifteen years teaching English including leading a department. Comprehension, written accuracy and timing are the mechanical parts of English, and mechanical things move fastest under revision pressure.

Worth saying plainly: these are individual results that particular parents chose to write about, not averages and not promises. How far a grade moves depends on the starting point, how long lessons run and how much work happens between them.

£30 for a 60-minute one to one lesson, with no minimum. A single lesson to clear one topic is a perfectly reasonable thing to book. Longer plans bring the rate down for families supporting a full exam season.
