The usual sticking points
Rarely because the maths is hard. Usually because the basics underneath it are shaky, because the questions are wrapped in real-life situations that hide which method is needed, or because nerves take over on the day.
Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio turn up inside almost every longer question. If those are shaky, a question about a shopping bill or a room's floor area becomes two problems rather than one.
Functional Skills wraps maths in real situations, which is the point of it, but it means you have to work out what is being asked before you can start. Plenty of learners can do the maths and still not know which maths to do.
Very common among adults who had a bad time with maths at school. Nerves make familiar questions look unfamiliar, and the fix is rehearsal rather than more content: timing, checking answers, and staying calm when a question looks strange.
Almost nobody needs to start the whole subject again. Most learners need three or four specific topics fixed and some practice at reading the questions properly, which is a far smaller job than it feels like at the start.
The content
Three content areas, all assessed through real-life problem solving: number and the number system, common measures with shape and space, and handling information and data. Lessons start with whichever is weakest.
Inside a lesson
Sixty minutes live on Zoom with a digital whiteboard. You work through questions while the tutor watches the working rather than the answer, and mistakes get corrected as they happen rather than in feedback afterwards.
Say so at the skills check. It changes how lessons run rather than whether you can pass. Topics get broken into smaller steps, you can ask the same question three times without anyone sighing, and progress is built on small wins rather than pushing through.
A good number of our Functional Skills learners had a bad time with maths at school and had avoided it for years. It is the normal starting point here, not an unusual one.
The assessment
Externally assessed at an approved centre, across a non-calculator and a calculator section under timed conditions. Timings and question styles vary between awarding bodies, so practice is matched to yours once you know it.

If you have not booked yet and do not know which you will sit, that is fine. The content is taught the same way and the exam practice is adjusted later.

Usually. Functional Skills learners often get better availability than GCSE students, because adults are more flexible on daytime slots and those are the easiest for us to fill. Tell us when you can do lessons and we will confirm before anything is booked.

No, and anyone who says otherwise is overselling. What tutoring does is find the topics costing you marks, teach the method properly and give you enough exam-style practice that the real thing feels familiar. The work still has to be done.
Many of our Level 2 learners are in exactly that position. The questions are more practical and real-life focused than GCSE, which suits a lot of people better, but it is still a proper qualification and needs preparing for. The skills check will tell you honestly how far off you are.
