Your child can explain Aquinas’s Five Ways and Kant’s categorical imperative, yet the essays keep coming back marked as description. A-Level Religious Studies rewards argument, and most of the marks sit there. An A-Level Religious Studies tutor from RS Remote Tutoring shows your child how to weigh a view, test it against a scholar and reach a judgement that holds.
Each session is a live Zoom call with one tutor and nobody else, planned around the board, the religion your child studies and the essay titles set at school. Our tutors cover philosophy of religion, ethics and the study of religion, and they mark written work during the lesson, so your child sees exactly where an argument gains or loses credit.

What lessons cover
What does A-Level Religious Studies tutoring cover?
Our A-Level Religious Studies tutoring covers philosophy of religion, religion and ethics, and the religious tradition your child studies. Every topic is practised through exam-style essays, so knowledge and evaluation improve together instead of being revised as two separate jobs.
Philosophy of religion: arguments and challenges
Lessons cover arguments for the existence of God, including the cosmological, teleological and ontological arguments, along with the problem of evil, religious experience and religious language. Your child learns how each argument is built and where it is weakest.
Scholars carry real weight here. Knowing how Hume, Kant or Hick responds to an argument gives an essay its evidence, and the tutor shows how to use a scholar’s point instead of simply naming them.
Religion and ethics: theories applied to issues
Ethics lessons work through normative theories such as natural law, situation ethics, utilitarianism and Kantian ethics, depending on the board, plus meta-ethics, conscience and free will. Your child then applies those theories to issues such as euthanasia or business ethics.
The tutor checks that a theory can be explained accurately before asking whether it actually works. That second question is where the higher marks begin.
The religion your child studies
Most courses include an in-depth study of one religious tradition chosen by the school. Depending on the board, that can be Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism or Sikhism, and Pearson Edexcel also offers New Testament Studies.
Lessons cover beliefs, sources of authority, practices and how the tradition has developed. Tell us the religion when you enquire, so the tutor match takes it into account.
Evaluative essays: AO1 and AO2
Two skills are marked. AO1 is knowledge and understanding. AO2 is analysis and evaluation, and it carries 60% of the marks on all four main specifications. An essay that only explains, however accurately, cannot reach the top levels.
Lessons practise what earns AO2 credit: a clear line of argument, a counter-argument taken seriously and a conclusion that follows from the reasoning before it.
Philosophy of religion, ethics and the religion your child studies, taught one-to-one and matched to their exam board.
Your board and papers
Which exam board does your child’s course follow?
AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel and Eduqas set different papers, timings and religion options for A-Level RS, so we check the specification before the trial. That way every practice essay mirrors the wording, time limit and mark levels of your child’s real exams.
The four main boards examine A-Level Religious Studies in different shapes. The number of papers, the time allowed and the choice of religion all vary, and that changes how essays should be planned and timed.
Board and specification
How the course is examined
AQA A-level Religious Studies (7062)
Two 3-hour papers, each worth 50%: Philosophy of religion and ethics, then Study of religion and dialogues, with Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam or Judaism
OCR A Level Religious Studies (H573)
Three 2-hour papers: Philosophy of religion, Religion and ethics, and Developments in religious thought in Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism or Hinduism
Pearson Edexcel A level Religious Studies (9RS0)
Three 2-hour papers chosen from four: Philosophy of Religion, Religion and Ethics, New Testament Studies and Study of Religion
Eduqas A Level Religious Studies (entry codes A120PA to A120PF)
Three 2-hour components: A Study of Religion (one of six religions), Philosophy of Religion, and Religion and Ethics
Assessment objectives
On all four specifications, AO1 knowledge and understanding carries 40% and AO2 analysis and evaluation carries 60%
Not sure of the board
A mock paper cover or a specification code such as 7062 or H573 is enough for us to pin the course down before the trial
Our A-Level Religious Studies tutors work with AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel and Eduqas, and their profiles also list WJEC. Harleen specialises in the Eduqas course, which helps when your child’s school follows that specification.
RS or Philosophy
How is A-Level Religious Studies different from A-Level Philosophy?
A-Level Religious Studies combines philosophy of religion and ethics with the in-depth study of one religious tradition. A-Level Philosophy, such as AQA 7172, covers knowledge, the mind, God and moral philosophy instead, with no religion studied in depth. Our tutors teach Religious Studies.
A-Level Religious Studies
Religious Studies asks how beliefs are argued for, lived out and challenged. Alongside philosophy of religion and ethics, your child studies one religion in depth: its thinkers, sacred texts, practices and the debates within it.
Essays are rewarded for accurate use of religious teaching and scholarship as well as for the quality of the argument.
A-Level Philosophy
Philosophy is a separate qualification. AQA’s A-level Philosophy (7172) is examined in two 3-hour papers covering epistemology, moral philosophy, the metaphysics of God and the metaphysics of mind. There is no study of a religion’s beliefs or practices.
The two subjects overlap, since arguments for God and ethical theory appear in both, but the emphasis and the question styles differ.
The two subjects share some arguments, but only Religious Studies includes the in-depth study of a religion.
Some families only discover the difference when choosing sixth form options. If the course on your child’s timetable is actually A-Level Philosophy, say so in the enquiry and we will find out whether a tutor can take it on before you commit to anything.
Is it right for your child
Who is one-to-one A-Level Religious Studies tuition for?
One-to-one A-Level Religious Studies tuition suits students whose essays describe instead of argue, who find the philosophy dense, or who know the scholars but cannot use them. Strong students chasing an A or A* use it too, to sharpen evaluation against the clock.
An A-Level RS tutor may help if your child:
writes accurate essays that still land in the middle mark levels;
follows an argument in class but cannot explain its weaknesses alone;
names scholars without showing what their view adds to the answer;
runs out of time before reaching a conclusion on longer essays;
finds religious language, meta-ethics or free will hard to pin down;
is aiming for an A or A* and needs essays tested against the top levels.
We start with your child’s own writing. A recent essay with the teacher’s comments tells the tutor more in ten minutes than a list of topics ever could.
Inside a lesson
What does an A-Level Religious Studies lesson look like?
Here is a typical 60-minute lesson on the cosmological argument. Your child recalls the argument, studies the main criticisms, plans an evaluative answer with the tutor, then writes a paragraph that is marked live against the board’s levels before the lesson ends.
CheckAbout 10 minutesYour child explains Aquinas’s argument from contingency in their own words. If a step is missing, such as why an endless chain of causes is rejected, the tutor fixes it first.
TeachAbout 15 minutesThe tutor introduces the strongest criticisms: Hume’s challenge to the idea that the universe as a whole needs a cause, and Russell’s reply that it may simply be ‘just there’.
PlanAbout 15 minutesTogether they plan an answer to a question such as ‘Assess whether the cosmological argument proves that God exists’. The plan states a judgement first, then decides which criticism to answer and which to concede.
Write and reviewAbout 20 minutesYour child writes one evaluative paragraph alone. The tutor marks it against the AO2 levels, shows where it slips into description and sets one essay task for the week. Parents receive the same summary.
The first lessons also work as a diagnosis. The tutor notes whether marks are being lost on knowledge, on evaluation or on timing, and plans the coming weeks around what they find.
Every lesson ends with writing that has been marked, so progress shows up in the essays themselves.
Who teaches A-Level RS
Who will teach my child A-Level Religious Studies?
Three tutors teach A-Level RS for us: Faijah, a PGCE teacher with QTS; Jonathan, who holds an MA in Theology; and Harleen, who gained an A* in the subject herself. The coordinator chooses between them on board, religion, target grade and timetable.
Faijah Hussain
Religious Studies and Philosophy, to A-Level
PGCE with QTS
BA Religion, Philosophy and Ethics
7 years teaching
Faijah studied Religion, Philosophy and Ethics at King’s College London before training as a teacher. Her Humanities teaching, in classrooms and online, runs from Year 7 up to A-Level, and she prepares her own model answers so sixth formers can see an evaluative argument laid out in full.
Jonathan Reed
Religious Studies and Philosophy, to A-Level
MA Theology
Philosophy and Ethics
With a Master’s in Theology, Jonathan is strongest on ethical theory and philosophy essays. He helps students who grasp a theory in class turn it into a timed essay with a clear structure and a judgement that answers the question.
Harleen
Religious Studies and English
Grade 9 GCSE RS
A* A-Level RS
Eduqas specialist
Harleen took Religious Studies to A-Level herself and achieved an A*. She concentrates on philosophy and ethical theory, essay structure and the use of scholars, and she is our specialist for the Eduqas specification.
Faijah, Jonathan and Harleen each hold a current enhanced DBS check for teaching under-18s. We also confirmed their identity, checked qualifications against certificates and took up references before they taught their first student.
Four steps to start
How does my child start A-Level RS tutoring?
Send a recent marked essay along with the board and religion studied. Our coordinator suggests a tutor with a reason, your child plans and begins an essay answer during a free 30-minute trial, then you choose whether to book a weekly slot.
Send an essay and the courseFill in the trial form with year group, board if known, the religion on the course, recent grades and convenient times. A marked essay with teacher comments helps most.
One tutor, with a reasonOur coordinator weighs board, religion and target grade, then names the tutor who fits best and explains the choice in a sentence or two.
Plan an essay in the trialOver 30 free minutes on Zoom, your child unpicks an exam question with the tutor and sketches a line of argument. We ask for no card details, so nothing needs cancelling.
Keep a fixed weekly hourWhen the trial goes well, lessons continue with that tutor at one set time each week. When it does not, we match someone else without charge.
Mock papers with comments are useful too, because they show whether timing or evaluation is the bigger problem and give the tutor real writing to respond to from the first minute.
How much does A-Level Religious Studies tutoring cost?
One hour of A-Level RS costs £30, the same as a KS3 or GCSE hour. Take three or more lessons in a week and each is £27.50; prepay the annual plan and each is £25, while the 30-minute trial is free.

Why do families trust us with A-Level Religious Studies essays?
Families choose us because one matched tutor stays with their child each week, essays are marked during the lesson instead of days later, and parents hear honest updates. Founder Rumaan Aslam, who still teaches, has led our online teaching of UK students since 2020.
Writing marked in the moment
In Religious Studies the gains come from rewriting. Because the tutor reads your child’s paragraph as it is written, a weak link in the argument is fixed while the reasoning is still fresh.
Updates you can act on
A short report follows each lesson: the essay or topic worked on, what is getting sharper, what still drifts into description and the practice set for next week. You never have to sit in to know how it went.
Vetted tutors and free rematching
All three RS tutors passed identity, certificate and reference checks, and each holds an enhanced DBS for work with under-18s. Should the pairing not suit your child, we rematch free of charge at any stage and no lesson is wasted.
Our wider A-Level tutoring works the same way in every subject, so a second A-Level joins at the same price, is matched the same way and is reported on in the same weekly notes.
London and UK families
Can sixth formers outside London have A-Level RS lessons online?
Yes. A-Level RS lessons run on Zoom, so a sixth former in York or Swansea is taught exactly as one in Ealing would be. RS Remote Tutoring works from Feltham in Greater London, and lessons slot around sixth form study periods and tutor availability.
For essay work, any laptop, tablet or desktop that has a webcam is ideal, with ordinary home broadband and a quiet corner. Zoom is free, and shared documents make it easy to write and edit an essay together. A phone works, but long-form writing is much easier on a bigger screen.
Some sixth formers ask for a recording so they can rewatch an essay plan before a mock, and we can arrange one if asked, as long as safeguarding, privacy and consent allow. Younger brothers or sisters can take GCSE Religious Studies tutoring with the same team and the same weekly routine.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for A-Level RS families on fees, boards, the religion option, Philosophy, essay help and how the free trial runs.
What does an hour of A-Level RS tutoring cost?
£30 for each 60-minute lesson. With three or more lessons a week each one is £27.50, and on the annual plan paid in one go it is £25. The 30-minute trial needs no card and costs nothing.
Which exam boards do your A-Level RS tutors cover?
Our tutors work with AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel and Eduqas, and their profiles also list WJEC. Name the board, or read the specification code off a mock paper, and we will choose a tutor familiar with how that course sets and marks essays.
Can you help with the religion my child studies?
Usually, yes. Courses offer options such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism, depending on the board. Tell us the religion when you enquire and we will take it into account before the trial is booked.
Do you teach A-Level Philosophy as well?
A-Level Philosophy is a different qualification from Religious Studies, and our A-Level tutoring in this area is for Religious Studies. For a Philosophy student, mention it on the form and we will say honestly whether one of our tutors can help before any booking.
Can a tutor help my child write better evaluative essays?
Yes, and most lessons include it. Your child writes during the lesson and the tutor marks the work against the board’s levels, showing where the argument is strong, where it turns into description and how to reach a justified conclusion.
Can you help close to mocks or final exams?
Yes. Send the exam dates, the board and the essay topics your child dreads most along with the trial request. Lessons then focus on the essays most likely to move the grade and on timed practice.
Will one RS tutor teach my child each week?
Yes. One tutor teaches your child at the same weekly time and comes to know how your child argues. If the pairing stops working at any stage, tell us and we will rematch without charge.
How do we book an A-Level Religious Studies trial?
Pick A-Levels and Religious Studies on the trial form, then add the board and religion if you know them, the main difficulty and suitable times. We come back with a named tutor and a trial time.
