After results day
Four routes, and the right one depends on how close the grade was, what it is needed for, and how soon. Working that out is more useful than rushing into an entry, and it takes about ten minutes.
Available for English Language and Maths on most boards. The fastest route if the grade is needed for a course starting soon, though the run-up is short.
Best if the grade was close and the deadline is now.
Open to all subjects, with a full year to prepare. Far less pressured, and the sensible choice if the gap is more than a grade or two.

Students who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or Maths are generally required to keep studying the subject while they remain in education or training, either through a GCSE resit or an approved alternative such as Functional Skills. Your school or college will confirm which applies to you.

Almost nobody fails a GCSE because they did not know enough. The assessment usually finds one of four things, and each needs a different response.
A student who ran out of time needs a completely different plan from one missing content. Repeating the whole year is the wrong answer to three of these four.
The short runway
Most boards run an autumn series for English Language and Maths only. Everything else waits until the following summer. The preparation window is roughly ten weeks, which is enough to move a grade if the time is spent on the right things.
Move a grade 3 to a grade 4 or 5, in most cases, provided the gap is technique and a handful of topics rather than the whole specification. That is the most common resit situation by some distance.
What it will not do is rebuild two years of missing foundations. If the assessment shows that is the situation, we will say so and recommend the summer series or Functional Skills instead of taking your money for a sitting that is unlikely to work.
Entries for the November series are made through a school, college or an exam centre, and the deadlines fall not long after results day. If you are no longer at school you will need to enter as a private candidate, which takes longer to arrange, so start that early.

Fifteen years teaching English including leading a department. Reading comprehension, grammar and written accuracy are where resit students gain fastest, because they are mechanical rather than interpretive.

A career in secondary and further education, including working with post-16 students retaking Maths in college. That is a different audience from Year 11 and he is used to it.

Worth saying plainly: these are individual results from first sittings that particular parents chose to write about, not resit averages and not a promise. How far a grade moves depends on the starting point, the runway and the work done between lessons.
